Yangshuo Specialities - Beer Fish

One of the most famous dishes in Yangshuo is Beer Fish (pijiu yu 啤酒鱼) and mustn’t be missed if you are into sampling the local cuisine.

Braised in beer, tomato, peppers, garlic, ginger and oyster sauce the dish is delightfully fragrant with the fish usually ending up deliciously tender pieces of flesh that literally melt in [...]

Yangshuo Specialities – Guilin Mifen

August 10th, 2009  |  by admin  |  published in eating & drinking, latest posts

A very popular local dish, “Mifen (米粉)” means rice noodles.

The noodles are quickly boiled and served with a few slivers of cooked pork either with or without soup/stock depending on the restaurant.   Various condiments and a basic “soup” or stock can be added according to your own taste.   Condiments usually include fried peanuts or soya [...]

Great New Bar in Yangshuo

August 6th, 2009  |  by admin  |  published in eating & drinking, latest posts

There is certainly no shortage of bars in Yangshuo.   What has been missing though is a relaxed bar that takes advantage of the sheer natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Superbly situated with fantastic views, the River Bar has certainly filled this void.
Indulge in a delicious fresh fruit cocktail as you drift off into the [...]

After spending a bit of time in Yangshuo you might notice that although there are many places to eat, often the dishes end up being quite similar.

One of my personal favorites is Pure Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant, next door to Magnolia Hotel in Diecui Road, Yangshuo.

Their menu is full of highlights with many dishes that are [...]

Everyone who comes to Yangshuo visits at least once and travelers often hang out in the cafes and bars in and around West street.    It is also the prime place for shopping in town for all tourists.  The result of all this – people.

West Street is crowded in [...]

Baby Back Ribs on the Menu

May 13th, 2009  |  by admin  |  published in eating & drinking, latest posts

The baby back ribs that got me raving a few weeks ago are now readily available at China Café (Yangshuo).

Supplies each day are limited as they are slow cooked for at least 3 hours, so get in early or better yet, reserve a set.

Pricey Leftovers

May 10th, 2009  |  by admin  |  published in eating & drinking, latest posts

Something you learn when living in China is that when you are invited for dinner you shouldn’t really finish all the food on the table.   Traditionally, it is impolite if the dishes are empty as it may be considered that the host didn’t provide enough food for you.

Celebrations are often extreme examples.   A recent [...]

Ribs in Yangshuo

April 28th, 2009  |  by admin  |  published in eating & drinking, latest posts

I love the idea of restaurants who thoroughly experiment to perfect a dish prior to it being introduced to the permanent menu.   To be included as a taster or tester definitely has benefits.

So, the opportunity to bite into a slab of glistening, full sized ribs, disproportionately endowed with thick, juicy chunks of meat is a [...]
