First Impressions – Contrasts of South Africa

Market Stall in South African village.

The quaint cafes, galleries and craft shops litter seemingly semi-deserted small villages and towns on the journey between Johannesburg and Kruger National Park giving a peaceful yet eerie sophisticated edge that could easily lead the visitor into thinking that this is typical nationwide.   Venture a little further afield to find the polar opposite of towns that seem to ooze soul – vibrant local market stalls sit street-side surrounded by an almost palpable buzz that radiates from the simple tasks of daily life.

Perhaps it is this blatant contrast which for me as a first impression defines South Africa as it continues to move away from a bruising past of inequality and suffering.
