The magnificent Detian Falls located on the China/Vietnam border shines with vivid, jewel like colour and is definitely worth a visit.
So much more attractive than just your standard trickle of water running over a cliff, Detian is some 200 metres wide and has three tiers of water rushing over its various edges. Despite the falls being at their lowest in terms of water flow at this time of year they remain totally awe-inspiring.
In fact, the drive from Daxin to Detian winds it way through some stunning karst landscape and in the final stages, along the edge of a gorgeous stream which tumbles limpid water into small rapids amongst turquoise pools.
Being based in Yangshuo the magnificent landscapes of limestone karsts is certainly not new however there was something different about the karsts in the Detian area, which strangely enough is often referred to as “Lesser Guilin”. At first I thought it was the road which has been built into the sides of the karsts rather than through the valley, but it is also that they have a much more mountainous nature to them.
The result is a spectacular journey to visit an awesome display of Mother Nature showing off some of her best.
