Hundreds and thousands of banana trees seem to stretch for miles and miles heading south out of Nanning. Making this uniform blanket of verdant trees that roll across the landscape a very colourful scene are the large piles of harvested yellow and green fruit lying stacked on the roadside and in trailers. Despite late November/early December being their traditional peak harvesting period, it is still easy to see plenty of bright blue plastic bags sheltering huge, maturing bunches of fruit still on the trees.
Seems all is not too happy in the world of bananas here in Guangxi province though with prices plummeting to an extremely low wholesale amount of just US$0.20c per kilo. (Such a crazy price comparison when in Australia they reached ridiculous levels of US$11 per kilo in July 2006.) Here’s to hoping demand and current price levels increase in the very near future.
