Heavy rainfall in the area necessitated the release of water last night from reservoirs upstream in the Li River. The surge in water has caused very minor flooding in the low lying areas of town, however for most it is business as usual. Those who were affected seem to have been very well prepared. We did have a break from the rain for a short time today and the sun even came out for an hour or so.
The tourist boats from Guilin did not run today, with most other activities on the river also banned. Well that is the official story. I did see a couple of crazy tourists getting onto one of the larger bamboo rafts this afternoon and head off into the swirling torrent.
Water levels in the Li River, Guilin reached 147.5 metres on Friday afternoon which is 1.8 metres above the warning level.
A further release of water has also apparently been scheduled to take place again tonight. So, I guess we will see where things stand tomorrow morning.
